Changing Young Lives
The Changing Young Lives Foundation (CYLF), formerly known as Save the Children Hong Kong, is a long-established charity organization based in Hong Kong. They are committed to identifying underprivileged youngsters and changing young lives for the better both in Hong Kong and in the Mainland.
There are currently 4 CYLF projects running in Hong Kong:
- Pay It Forward- Brings year-round developmental activities, including field trips, adventure camps, career development workshops, and more to children in difficult situations homes with domestic violence; single, widowed or divorced parents; parents in prison and new immigrants.
- Slam Dunk- Aims to enhance young people’s sense of unity while training them to be self-confident and self-disciplined through basketball training, tournaments and their own social service. This programme has benefitted 5,000 people since it’s launch.
- Brain Box- Launched to tackle Hong Kong’s significant number of underprivileged children with learning difficulties and support their families, the Brain Box programme gives children who have been selected by CYLF’s partner schools an 8-week computer programme that strengthens memory, attention, processing and sequencing through combining education with fun. Workshops on parental support are also provided for the families.
- Smart Mum-Helps young mothers and mothers to be who are recovering drug abusers by preparing them for their newborns and helping them become mothers who can raise their children healthily. This programme is run in collaboration with the Society for the Aid and Rehabilitation of Drug Users.
Also in Hong Kong is the Saving Young Lives Foundation Learning Centre in Shek Kip Mei. The centre provides a home away from home for many children, and gives them the opportunity to learn English, computer skills, and arts and crafts. There is a gym for them to exercise, a dance studio, a home economics room for aspiring chefs and even a music room with recording facilities.
There is no charge for the use of any of these facilities. CYLF is also very active in Mainland China where they are involved in rebuilding and maintaining schools, teacher training, and medical care for kids. In Guangxi province, they support the Tianyang Special School for children with disabilities with assessment and rehabilitation services, teacher training, student subsidies and the purchase of school facilities.
